EACC Raids Kiambu Governor Wamatangi’s Residence Over Corruption Allegations

In a dramatic turn of events that has sparked widespread interest across the country, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, launched early morning raids targeting Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi. The anti-graft agency's detectives raided both his personal residence and county government offices in an ongoing investigation into alleged embezzlement and abuse of office.

According to reliable sources, the EACC operation also targeted nine other top officials in the Kiambu County Government. The move is part of a broader crackdown on suspected corruption in Kiambu County, following months of growing pressure from both the public and elected leaders.

Why Governor Wamatangi Is Under Investigation

The investigation stems from multiple allegations, including irregular payments, land grabbing, and conflict of interest in the awarding of contracts. One major case involves a complaint by the Postal Corporation of Kenya, accusing the county of illegally taking over its land in Thika town. The petition, filed last month, named Governor Wamatangi and Chief Officer Daniel Njenga as key figures in the alleged scheme.

In addition, Senator Karungo Wa Thang'wa earlier raised alarms about a suspicious shift from the county’s automated payroll system to a manual one, a move that allegedly facilitated payments to non-existent employees. The senator claimed that up to Ksh390 million may have been lost through this alleged ghost worker scam.

Calls for accountability have been growing louder in recent months. Prominent leaders including Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah and Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a have demanded a full audit of Kiambu County’s finances and urged the EACC and DCI to act swiftly. Their calls seem to have finally prompted the current EACC raid on Wamatangi's home and offices.

Wamatangi Maintains Innocence

Governor Wamatangi has previously dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and an attempt to derail his leadership. In several public addresses, he claimed that some of the accusations were fabricated by corrupt individuals unhappy with his crackdown on cartels within the county system.

He also alleged that his life was under threat due to his refusal to approve questionable payments and deals. “I will not be intimidated by corruption cartels,” he said during a county assembly address earlier this year.

What Next?

As of the time of writing, Governor Wamatangi has not been arrested, and no official charges have been announced. The EACC has stated that the investigations are ongoing and that evidence collected during today’s raids will inform the next course of action.

The people of Kiambu are now watching closely, demanding transparency and swift justice if any wrongdoing is confirmed. The EACC operation in Kiambu is expected to set the tone for anti-corruption efforts in other counties heading into 2025.
